1 Corinthians 7

Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife of her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his body but the wife does – 1 Corinthians 7:2-4

The word “chaste” and “chastity” is derived from the Latin word, ‘castitas’ meaning “morally pure”. In our world today, chastity is not observed by all due to diversity in faiths and culture. As a result of this, moral purity is being viewed as extremism when it comes to keeping one self from sexual activity. We as children of God have been commanded that the sacred activity of procreation is to be employed only between man and his wife, lawfully or traditionally wedded as husband and wife.

He also instructed through his word to touch not the unclean things, come out of evil practices and be ye separate. God has however not rescinded the strict standard of chastity he taught in the old and new testament. In this vein, we can say chastity is an act of being separated from immoral actions. Immorality varies such as fornication, adultery, homosexuality, bestiality, masturbation, prostitution, and others.

Many marriages have ended due to unfaithfulness from spouses and not to talk of singles who have entered into relationships thereby resulting into pre-mature births of children in the world. Teenagers and children according to a recent study reveals that they are now exposed to this act either from nannies, uncles, aunties, neighbors or even parent. Thus, we would be discussing reasons why we must avoid sexual impurity.

Nobody is immune to sexual temptation. It is a serious problem and deserves serious attention. If we must dig deep into the end result of sexual immorality in our world today the list is endless

Unwanted pregnancy

One reason to avoid premarital or extramarital intercourse is the possibility of pregnancy. In some countries in the world, abortion has been legalized which makes it very rampant among the youth. Morally speaking we know that abortion is caused by immorality. Anyone who aborts a child has just murdered a person. Rather than cut short a life is it not better to desist from the act of sexual immorality until a person is married and able to cater for a child’s well being.

Veneral diseases are exponential in their increase, as society is less and less careful about sexual behavior. The fact is AIDS, genital herpes, syphilis, hepatitis, and pelvic inflammatory diseases are tragic realities in our world.

Obsessive desire

This is an abnormal feeling that stems from sexual intercourse. It affects a person psychologically, mentally, and spiritually. It is an uncontrollable urge that could lead to rape if not completely curbed

Soul tie

This is not a common word because of its spiritual undertone but there are a number of bible passages that points to soul tie as being unavoidable in any sexual activity. We see such occurrence in Genesis 34:3 “And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.” As soon as Shechem had intercourse with Dinah there was an immediate soul tie that took place meaning anyone who does that will experience same. Another scripture affirms that.

“Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? for, as it is written, The two will become one flesh.” (1 Cor.6:16). The bible verse explains clearly that a joining to another takes place when one gets sexually involved. It is in this vein one must avoid sexual sins.

Sexual immorality is a sin committed against the body. It is the work of the flesh and unacceptable before God. Ephesians 5:3 “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints.”

Romans 1:24 “Wherefore God gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dis-honor their own bodies between themselves.” It is a sinful act indeed.

According to the bible verse above (1 Corinthians 7:2) we are reminded that everyone should flee fornication and if we cannot abstain then it is better to get married. Rather than burn for lust it is advisable to get married. Even after marriage we must not cheat on our spouses either with other people or defraud ourselves in the marriage. The word of God is the mind of God so let us quickly take a look at other bible verses that speaks explicitly on the subject.

“Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord: and the Lord for the body” (1 Corinthians 6:18). “For this is the will of God, even our sanctification, that we should abstain from fornication” (1Thessalonians 4:3). We can see from the above scriptures that the will of God is for all to abstain from fornication because of its destructiveness to our body and lives. Sodom and Gomorrah is an example of a place where immorality was rampant in the bible which led to their abnormal behavior and then their death.

God is not pleased with sexual immorality, it grieves him when he mentions it in the scriptures. We can only get his blessing when we engage in sex as married couples not to the same gender as practiced by some people.

Couples who remain chaste before marriage report greater satisfaction in their marriages than those who have been sexually active. Their marriages are more stable and fulfilling than those who had pre-marital sex. Being chaste also increases your odds of having a lasting marriage. Numerous studies suggest that if a couple has had sex before marriage, the pair is more likely to get divorced. The divorce rate for couples who live together before marriage is nearly twice that of couples who do not cohabitate.

Research has shown that experimenting with one or more sex partners doesn’t prepare one for being able to maintain a lasting committed relationship. Another great benefit of chastity before marriage is that it builds trust and peace in the relationship. There is no greater gift that a man and a woman can give each other on their wedding night than the gift of being undefiled. Remember the body is God’s temple.

Chastity deepens ones relationship with God, the time that God gives for the single life is precious-and not merely because you have more freedom to do what you want to do. It is precious because it provides a unique opportunity to bring all your spiritual graces into full flower-and to do so in ways that will bear fruit for the rest of your life. (1 Corinthians 7:34). Chastity is indeed a virtue of wholeness, the virtue that prevents us from the disgrace of being reduced to a mere appetite. Chastity enables us to love others justly without any strings attached.

It makes us better teachers to the younger generation without any feeling of guilt. Chastity reduces any form of slander or blackmails as we see in the dailies. It keeps us from unnecessary problems. Chastity increases our self – confidence and self – respect in life. When we abstain from sexual activity it reduces attacks from unclean spirits. We are mentally balanced and not driven by an uncontrollable urge. It helps us to remain pure in thought.

It gives you freedom to exercise control over your life and develop real friendships based on mutual respect, shared thoughts, and feelings. It increases your chances of completing your education and achieve financial freedom before having to marry. Chastity gives you ample time to focus on your skills, talents, and healthy relationships with others.

Chastity is not something like a jacket that you can put on or take off whenever you like. Chastity is a part of yourself that communicates itself to others in our daily words and actions. Modesty is one important way to express chastity. Putting on appropriate clothing, not calling undue attention to your bod, and keeping your speech free from sexually suggestive talks. Modesty in speech and action is a virtue that applies to everyone, men as well as women. Remember this.

Keep away from staying alone with the opposite sex in a secluded place. Always spell out your stand or take on sexual activity when dating. Don’t enter a relationship that your partner doesn’t agree on chastity. Spend quality time praying and studying the word of God. Remember the Bible verse that states in Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin against thee.”
