The Word of God shows us that God is totally against pride. Therefore, as a Christian, if you are prideful, you would need to deal with it. The Spirit of God through the Apostle John lets us know that pride is not from God but the world. “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” 1 John 2: 16. If it is not from God that means it is not good for the Christian.

Certain attitude causes a Christian to become prideful. Chief of these is poor knowledge of God’s Word. When a Christian lacks a good knowledge of the Word of God, he will find himself being proud of what he ought to be ashamed of. Imagine someone or a Christian proud of sleeping with a man or woman he or she is not married to. That is adultery or fornication but because he or she does not know from Scripture that it is a sin, pride sets in. “Their future is eternal loss, for their god is their appetite: they are proud of what they should be ashamed of; and all they think about is this life here on earth” Philippians 3: 19.

Another cause of pride is fear. When you are afraid of exposing your seemingly weakness or vulnerability because you think other will take undue advantage of you then pride will spring up in your heart. This should not be so because God did not give you the spirit of fear. “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” 2 Timothy 1: 7.

Yet another cause of pride in a Christian is setting a perfectionist standard for himself. That is, holier than all attitude. He tries to prove he is better or holier than others around him. Or trying to attain Christian maturity he has not developed himself to walk in. “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” Philippians 2: 3.

Pride can also be as a result of supremacist attitude. In other words, the individual thinks he better, smarter or know it all attitudes. A person with this attitude will definitely be proud. He becomes judgmental. “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him” Proverbs 26: 12.

So much for the causes of pride, let see how one can deal with it. If you have challenge with being prideful, the first thing you must do is to sincerely repent of it and ask God to help you. Learn more of God’s Word so you know God’s thoughts concerning issue and how to deal with people. “But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends” 2 Corinthians 10: 17 – 18.Another simple way to deal with pride is for you to practice humility. Yes, practice how to take ‘shit’ from people especially those you ordinarily would not think twice to berate. It is taking a place of a servant instead of the master. “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited” Romans 12: 16
