Genesis 1

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26). KJV.

When God began the wok of re-creation, he had an intent in His heart and it was that he would have a representative on earth; a steward; one he could commit his works to as a caretaker. A steward is someone who manages property or affairs for another entity. A steward is one who has charge of buildings and grounds or animals. God entrusted man with his creation. It was indeed an exalted position bestowed on man. In a sense we are gods on earth (Psalms 82:6). Man was to be an overseer over God’s works.

He created man in His image and likeness with his creative and rational ability. An image is defined as an optical or other representation of a real object; a graphic; a picture. So man is a representation of the great God of the universe. As we would have landlords who would commit their houses to those called caretakers; so also did God who is the original landlord commit His creation to we his caretakers. While ‘Likeness’ can be defined as the state or quality of being like or alike. It is synonymous with words like similitude, resemblance, and similarity.

However man fell from this position as the devil envied man and sought to usurp man’s authority. Man became a slave to that which he was to rule over. The entire cosmos was turned upside down. Degradation set in and the original order of creation was overturn. Man no longer had dominion over the sea, air, and earth. And this was most disheartening to God. The first man had failed, but God didn’t give up on man – even though the devil became the god on earth.

But all through the ages and dispensations God has been working to restore man to his original state. The devil began to dominate like a draconian that he is and he began to influence and raise his kind of man; men who were just like him in similitude. He raised men who were liars and murderers like himself. Men like Cain, the rebel who murdered his own brother (Gen.4:8), and men like Lamech who the second murderer (Gen.4:23).

The devil was bent on frustrating the works of God. Nimrod was one of such men influenced by the devil. He was a rebel who instigated men to build a city and a tower in a bid to develop a system outside of God. He went the way of Cain, the model of rebels. The bible talks about the way of Cain in Jude 1:11. The way of Cain is the way of self- seeking, the way of rebellion; the way of seeking to establish a system outside of God. He went out from the presence of God, and dwelt in the land of Nod (Gen.4:16).

As much as the devil was fighting God’s system, God was also working behind the scene, raising his own men. He raised men like Enoch who scripture confirms walked with God. He was a model of one who fellowshipped with God as it is written in Gen.5:24, “And Enoch walked with God; and he was not; for God took him.” Abraham was raised by God. He was called out from an idolatrous household and with Abraham God began the called out race (see Gen.12). Noah also was raised by God.

He found grace in the sight of God (Gen.6:8). He was accounted to be a man of righteousness. All of these men were only shadows of God’s real Man, the Man Christ Jesus (1 Tim.2:5). God raised these men to prove to the devil that despite his usurping of the first man’s authority, he still wasn’t short of men he as God could raise with the power of His Spirit to carry out exploits for Him.

Even though the position man lost in the garden of Eden wasn’t fully restored, God still used His men to dominate certain spheres of influence in their time. These men were literally gods on earth. Men like Elijah who dominated politics and religion in Israel. He was a terror to then government of Ahab and Jezebel such that Ahab called him the troubler of Israel (1 Kings 18:17). Elijah was so godlike that he called fire from heaven (2 kings 1:12). God still had stewards on earth who represented his interest and took care of his creation on earth.

We have seen examples of men who showcased God’s authority on earth but some more will be mentioned here. When God gave his first prophecy in Gen.3:15 concerning how the seed of the woman will bruise the head of the serpent and the serpent bruising the heel of her seed and the enmity that would be established between her seed and the seed of the serpent, God was drawing a battle line between satan and his cohorts both man and spirits, and the godly seed of men who were to be raised by God.

This battle line was drawn from the day satan usurped man’s authority. Satan raised men who began to war with the godly seed. A typical example was how Cain, a serpent seed killed Abel, a godly seed. The previous examples cited of God’s men who exercised his authority on earth like Abraham, Noah, Enoch are the godly seed while the men of the devil like Cain, Nimrod etc. are the seed of the serpent.

But the prophecy looked far into the future of an actual seed of the woman, Mary who was to bear a seed called Jesus. This is the same Seed who was promised to Abraham (Gen. 12:7; Gal.3:16). This seed, Christ is God’s ultimate Man. He is the seed of the woman that has bruised the head of the serpent. And we are His fellow seed, because we are joined to him (Gal.3:29; 1 Cor.6:17) and together with our Captain we defeat the enemy and his seeds. This battle has been on for ages; even the battle of dominion over the earth.

God in his infinite wisdom beat the devil hands down by using his man to defeat him. The devil usurped a man but the Man Jesus Christ usurped him. And the devil lost the battle. He lost the battle over those who are the seed of God in Christ. Therefore he has no dominion over us as proved in Colossians 1:12-13 AMP, “Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified and made us fit to share the portion which is the inheritance of the saints (Gods holy people) in the Light. [The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the DOMINION of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love…” For as long as we have received Christ, we are no longer under the dominion of the devil.

God had in mind the restoration of man back to his original position even before the foundation of the world by already providing a substitute, a lamb that was to take away the sin of the world (Rev.13:8; John 1:29). So man’s fall did not catch God unawares. Yes, the devil succeeded in taking the dominion of man but Jesus the second man defeated him and took back that authority and has restored dominion back to us (Matthew 28:18; Mark 3:15; Luke 10:17-19). That’s why the bible declares that we are more than conquerors through Him that loves us (Rom. 8:37).

God’s word says, “He that is in us is greater than he that is in the world…” (1 John 4:4). Jesus spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, TRIUMPHING over them in it” (Colossians 2:15). And God causes us to TRIUMPH in Christ (2 Cor. 2:14). It is only those who are not yet in Christ who are still under the dominion of the devil. He is still the god of the world but he is not god over us, we have been purchased by Christ from his dominion (Col.1:13) and we are the ones who have dominion over him. So we are free to exercise our dominion over the earth like our Lord did and exercise the authority he has given us.

Conclusively, as God’s seed who now have the dominion of Christ, we are to destroy the influence of the devil and his seed over certain spheres of influence in the world and these areas we are to dominate are:

  1. The Media

  2. The Government

  3. Education

  4. Economy

  5. Religion

  6. Family

  7. Celebration

By the power in us, we can dominate these areas.
