How to manage time as a Christian

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-18, Mathew 5:18

When it comes to managing time, two things are important; Understanding time and managing it like God does.

Understanding time. Time is only in existence on earth; there is no time in eternity. Time, like money, is one of the earthly resources we have. The first thing God created was light, Right? But in creating light and darkness, He created day and night; Time.

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day (Genesis 1:3-5 NIV).

Everyone has same amount of time but some people seem to do more with theirs. As a Christian, you can never go wrong managing time like God does

Managing time the God way. When it comes to managing time, two things are important; “The What” and “The When”. When considering these things, you have got to do it from the God’s perspective; “Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect”. Jesus is simply just saying, copy what God does like Jesus did (John 5:19).

Simply put, God knows “what” should be done and he does it at the perfect “when”; “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11a NIV)

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” (Habakkuk 2:3 NIV).

The first thing about managing time is knowing “what” is important; getting your priorities right. The bible says it better;

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV)

You can’t hold time but you can manage your priorities. You need to know what is most important at each time and discipline yourself to do it first in spite of how you feel about it. This will ensure everything happens at its own time. To do this, you will need discipline and to overcome laziness and procrastination which are notable hindrances to time management.

The next thing is knowing the “when”. If you did the right thing at the wrong time, you would still be wasting time. You need to know when something has to be done and do it then. Sometimes timing differs for several people even when it comes to important events of life like marriage that’s why the Holy Spirit is key in deciding when to do a thing. Imagine still working to earn a daily living at 60 when you are supposed to be enjoying what you have built over years, yet this is how most people are. Your when has to be discerned and you have to do this ahead of time and start working for the future from today, it is called being proactive

Finally, there is never enough time to do everything but there’s always enough time to do the most important things. Make every second count like God does; do the most important things first, finish them then go on to other things.
