HOW TO RESPOND TO AN ATHEIST AS A CHRISTIAN
The best way to respond to an atheist is to show them the sincere love of God. They grope in the darkness without light and stagger like drunkards because they do not know the love of God. Every atheist secretly fills the God-shape vacuum in their spirit but because of pride and lack of knowledge they deny the obvious. They are either myopic or dull in mind and thus, cannot comprehend with abundance or evidences around us to prove that God do exist.
In showing them the love of God you have to constantly pray for them because it is the devil that has blinded their minds to believe in God. “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” 2 Corinthians 4: 4. Your prayer for them will remove the cloak that the devil uses to seal their minds. “Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man and then he will spoil his house” Matthew 12: 29.
Evidences from both the natural things around us and the order on how living things naturally operate and organize themselves are enough proofs to the atheist that there is God or that God do exist. However, his wickedness will always blind the thoughts hence he cannot see or perceive glaring evidences that God created him. “In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God” Psalm 10: 4.
After saturating the mind of the atheist with prayer and love, carefully introduce the Lord Jesus Christ to him. The best way to do this is to share your personal salvation or healing testimonies. That the atheist knows you and can easily relate with you, he is able appreciate your testimony and see the Hand of God at work in your life.
Another thing you can do is to befriend the atheist and systematically invite him to church. What you intend to achieve is to introduce him to the Holy Spirit and the ministry of the Word God. Remember it is the Holy Spirit that convicts the sinner. “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” John 16: 8. When the atheist gets to church, do not rush him into anything only introduce him to your pastor if you can and he will take over from there. “Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good!” Psalm 14: 1. As you prayerfully introduce the atheist to God and the gospel, do not condemn him. While he still debate or ague the existence God, introduce him to the Bible. Recommend that he spend a few days to read the gospel according to Saint John. As he reads on his own, in the comfort and privacy of his home, the Holy Spirit will take over his spirit for the Lord Jesus Christ.
