Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2.

As a true follower of Christ, should I be involved in the celebration of Halloween? This is one of the questions most believers do ask. Before we go into whether celebrating Halloween is right or wrong as a follower of Christ, let’s briefly look into history of Halloween.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on 31st October of every year. The tradition of celebrating Halloween originated from one of the ancient Celtic seasonal festival called Samhain. According to the Celts, this day marked the end of the summer and the beginning of the winter.

The Celts believed that on that night, that is October 31st, the boundary between the earthly world and the world of spirits has gotten thin or dissolved, which means that spirits and other weird creatures with strange power could wander about on earth causing troubles and tormenting them. They also believe the presence of those spirits and weird creatures will make it easier for the Celtic priests to make divinations and predictions about their future and the long winter period. So the Celtic priests built a huge sacred bonfire where people burn their animals and crops as a form of sacrifice to the deities, to help with the divination rituals. They also wear costumes to help keep at bay, those spirits and weird creatures.

As you can see from the history of Halloween, it is clearly shown that it is all about making sacrifices to spirits and deities to get divination and lay off spirits. So why will you be involved in a festival that has to do with worshiping spirits. It is a sin to worship any other gods before our God according to Exodus 20: 3-4. Our God is a jealous God, so he frowns at anything that takes His place. The society may have approved the practice and they may see nothing wrong in it. However, just because the society has approved it, just because people do it doesn’t make it right in God’s eyes. The bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 6: 14-18 that:

“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with the darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6: 14-18.

The bible also tells us in James 4:4 that, “Friendship with the world is enmity with God”. So as a believer, do you want to be friends with the world to celebrate world the things of the world and disobey God. I am sure your answer is ‘No’.

So make a decision to separate and sanctify yourself today. God bless you as you do so.
