Listening to Secular Music as a Christian

Galatians 6:7-8, James 4:4

Music as defined by the Advanced English Dictionary; an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner. Secular as defined by same dictionary; not concerned with or devoted to religion or characteristic of or devoted to the temporal world as opposed to the spiritual world

Music is an essential part of life, it goes directly to the soul and sometimes to the spirit it also originates in like manner. Our love for music is due to our being fashioned in God’s image; God loves music! There is a lot of melodious signing in heaven. In fact Lucifer was a Key musical before his rebellion and fall so we cannot underestimate the power of music. Music itself is beautiful and pleasurable but with secular music, “the kind that is not devoted to religion” we must apply great caution.

Reasons why secular music should be avoided.

So what’s good about Secular music? The only good thing about secular music is that it is music and so it is pleasurable to the soul and spirit. The main problem with secular music is the content (information) it releases to your subconscious mind (every music has a message, communicates something. See definition above). This is important because our minds take what we feed it regularly and this forms our dominant thoughts and hence influence our actions, behavior, emotions and will. It take over our soul and can either strengthen or mar our spirit. Thankfully, not all secular music are bad. Some have good content that inspire positivity while majority do not. It is this majority we refer to when we speak of secular music.

The content of these songs are characterized by profanity, vanity and shallowness all of which are works of flesh which do not please God and our mind absorbs all that so fast because of the pleasure that comes with music. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envying, murders, drunkenness, reveling, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).Most secular music one way or the other promote one or more of the above lifted and they cause these things to dominate our thoughts influencing us to act in ways that will displeases God.

What God Wants. God wants us to desist from sowing to the flesh in this manner to save us from the destruction it brings. Sowing to the flesh can destroy us because it separates us from God making us vulnerable.

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (Galatians 6:7-8)

“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4).

Take this God’s candid advice and you would love that you did; “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). This is not nearly as easy as it sounds especially if you are used to secular music. You will need to ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to stick to your decision to quit secular music (2 Corinthians 12:9). Then you should separate yourself from all forms of secular music; delete them from your phone, destroy the tapes, get away from people who will never hear “quit” about secular songs. Ask God to purify your mind and depend on him to help you through the process.
