Psalm 1-19

‘I am suffering terribly. O Lord, revive me with your word!’ – Psalm 119:107

As long as we are resident on the earth till Jesus comes there are natural and unnatural factors that are unavoidable for every man. Some will term it as difficulties or challenges while others will say bluntly that they are suffering. All of these different interpretation means just one thing that man is in a state of perpetual dis-comfort and needs a savior to ease the burden. For a believer because we tend to know the truth the suffering is most times heightened either by the devil himself, the flesh, or people around us turning against us because of our belief.

In difficult and happy moments the word of God is a manual inspired by the Holy Spirit to stabilize us on planet earth. 2 Timothy 3:16: “Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” Without the word of God man would have been lost in a state of complete nothingness living by the scientific theory of how the world was formed and the evolution of man.

No wonder God had to introduce man to the testament (the law) to direct man on earth and when the need for a better covenant to save man was made available by God. We see a new testament surfacing to elaborate more on the existing one.

What is the WORD?

According to John 1:1-4, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was fully God. The word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life and the life was the light of mankind.”

The above scripture tells us explicitly what the word is, by making us know that the word has been in existence since the beginning and it is God. The word of God is the material of creation from which every realm of existence came to be. In the beginning when all things received their being, the word was, and did actually subsist. The word of God is Spirit, spoken out by the Almighty God and thereafter, it manifested to become realms of existence and subsequently, man and all other creations were created.

Man, therefore, is a product of the word of God. It means that if we are born of the word, we are nothing but the word. And if we are a product created by the word, I am by every ramification the word. It also means that I am enriched with creative powers and therefore can speak a word like my father, the God Almighty and the word declared can be manifested into a physical reality because our essential characters are identical.

Many people are ignorant of the power of the spoken word and as a result, suffer the effect of the enemy’s unrighteous verbal attack. A number of people are suffering from ailments caused by evil spoken words. But God has made provisions through his word to counter the enemies’ evil words. Having established the fact of the meaning of the word let us proceed to know the efficacy of the word

Psalm 107:20, “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” We can see that the word of God has the power to deliver and heal all kinds of diseases. No matter the suffering the word of God is a problem solver to physical, mental, or spiritual problem. It can tackle any situation.

Remember John 1:4 states that “In him (word) was life and the life was the light of mankind.” It proves further that the word is a carrier of life able to revive and bring something dead back to life. It has the ability to restore, repair and empower. There is power, ability and energy in the spoken word of God. The word of God contains spiritual energy to address every problem.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” The word of God is constantly alive. It is like a grain of corn planted in a field. God’s spoken and written word is alive. The apostle Peter wrote, “for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For all flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and falls off, But the word of the Lord endures forever.”

We know that a lamp is used to give light to a place. In this context the word of God is depicted as a lamp for better viewing. (Psalm 119:105)

Jeremiah 29:22 “Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces.”

And take the helmet of the salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. This may seem figurative but it is exactly what it is and using a lesser word may undermine the word. The word of God is even sharper than a sword.

Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. (John 17:17)

Luke 8:11, “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God…”

‘As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.’ – 1 Peter 2:2 KJV.

The Lord Jesus Christ is a great example of one who used the word of God to resist temptation of the devil posed at him after fasting for 40 days and night in the wilderness. (Luke 4:4)

The written and spoken word of God is an established statutory spiritual constitution that must be obeyed by every creature. Whenever it is spoken it must surely come to fulfilment. We do not need to render assistance to the word before it accomplishes its purposes. It is like the law of gravity that says what goes up must come down. So, the written words, which were spoken by God through divine inspiration must surely come to pass, whether your enemy likes it or not.

Through the word of God the Lord Jesus taught his disciples and set captives free as we can see in this bible verse Luke 4:18, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”

The power in the word of God cannot be measured or quenched. Even the scriptures affirms that Heaven and Earth will pass away but my words will never pass away. (Luke 21:33) reveals that the word of God is more powerful than the created things. The power in the word can produce unimaginable result. The word of God can cause revival. Wherever the word of God is spoken, it quickens, activates and energizes the recipient.

The word of God is pure and for it to continually work in our lives we must do the following:

  1. Be born Again

  2. Live holy

  3. Be baptized in the Holy Ghost

  4. Have faith in God

  5. Study the word

  6. Meditate on the word

  7. Pray always

  8. Share the gospel with others

The word of God can deliver both from long term and short-term bondages. It can transform lives by changing a difficult situation. The word of God can single a person out of the multitude for greatness. It can heal all manner of diseases and infirmities.

The power in the word of God can re-create by bringing what does not exist into existence. The Lord magnifies his word even more than his name (Psalm 138:2) so when we remind God of his word he moves to do according to his word spoken about. The power in the word is inexhaustible, it can grow like in the days of the early church and it can never cease.

The word of God that is likened to a double-edged sword that pierces the heart brings convictions to the heart of a sinner like it accomplished after Peter preached to 3,000 (Acts 2:41). The potency of God’s word can therefore not be overemphasized, hence the need to study and pray.
