Psalm 3-4

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You, Lord, make me dwell in safety and confident trust (Psalms 4:8) AMP.

Life is full of ups and downs, troubles everywhere, challenging situations we face every day which leaves us in the state of unrest. But the reality is as much as we seek escape routes from these perturbing situations, we really get no rest as expected. Like someone once said, “in this life there can be no rest until we get to heaven.” Well, to an extent I concur with this assertion but the truth however is if we go through the right channel, we can still find peace and safety in this world we are in.

God Almighty loves his creatures and especially, we who have been created in His image. Peace is our heritage in the Christ of God for Christ himself is our peace (Isa. 9:6). In a bid to find peace, many have gone astray. Men who have troubles in their matrimonial homes seek peace in the hands of strange women, beer parlors, brothels, clubs and so on but these factors have not in any way brought the comfort and peace they so desire for this even leaves them empty than ever. The bible makes it clear that God will keep in constant peace those whose minds are stayed on Him (Isa. 26:3).

When it comes to having a sense of security, we go all the way out for security. No soothsayer needs to tell us that are our lives are in danger every day, especially at this time the world is still battling with the corona virus pandemic and its effects. The populace doesn’t feel safe anymore. Many have actually lost their lives due to this pandemic. Many have been isolated in other to keep them away from others so they don’t get infected. We can see all of these as signs of insecurity.

No one is actually safe outside of Christ and that is why scripture states that the Name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous run into it (Proverbs 18:10). There is absolute security in the Lord. As believers who are genuinely saved, we must admit to the inner peace and assurance we have in Christ especially if our minds are focused on Him (Isa. 26:3). Jesus was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: and the chastisement that brought us peace was laid on Him (Isa. 53:5). Another version of the bible says, “He was punished so that we could have peace…” There is lasting peace for those who love the teachings of God (Psa. 119:165).

The peace and safety of which we speak and find in Christ is not exactly external as all around may be chaos but in our inside, we have peace. Isa. 54:10 describes this kind of peace best, “The Mountains may move, and the hills may shake… My promise of peace will never change,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” It is out of His compassion and love for us He gives us His peace. God’s plans for us are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give us a future filled with hope (Jer. 29:11). In response to our fears of insecurity and unrest, God is assuring us today in His word, Jer. 33:6, “But I will heal this city and restore it to health. I will heal its people, and I will give them PEACE AND SECURITY. This is our lot in God.

Humanity has always sought to find peace and lasting solutions to the problems in the world and this has led to the establishments of various peace keeping organizations. The European Union which is an amalgamation of different European Union also have the goal of promoting peace. But none of their peace keeping missions have achieved lasting result because nations have still entered numerous conflicts. World peace is therefore the concept of an ideal state of happiness, freedom, and peace within and among all people and nations on Planet earth.

Different cultures, religions, philosophies, and organizations have varying concepts on how such a state would come about. Various religious and secular organizations have the stated aim achieving world peace through addressing human rights, technology, education, engineering, medicine, or diplomacy used as an end to all forms of fighting. But none of these things have worked.

In fact it is also believed according to scriptures that the intent of the one world government and the one world religion under the antichrist and the false prophet (Read Revelation 13) would be to promote peace and unity in the government and among religious bodies but these are actually camouflages as to their original intent of turning the world away from God. It is the definition of the New World Order that has been highly expected by world leaders; it is an order against God.

And in response to all of these schemes of men and the man of sin to bring about as it were false peace, 1 Thess. 5:3 states thus, “For when they shall say, PEACE AND SAFETY; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” So we see from the latter verse of the bible, that the peace and safety men seek outside of God will eventually be frustrated.

The world is passing away, and no world leader can bring about lasting peace. Iniquity will abound. The only thing we can do as believers is to preach the gospel of peace. The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD (Proverbs 21:31). The United Nations, the European Union and all other world peace keeping related bodies have failed in their bringing about peace to the world as the continual civil and military conflicts prove so. No matter how powerful their military is, it is still futile except the Lord Himself brings about peace as proved in Proverbs 21:31.

God knowing the limitations of man had already provided a remedy in His Son. A remedy and lasting solution to the upheavals, failures of man. As seen in the case of how world leaders have sought to achieve peace, it has remained unsuccessful. And that is why we look to the government of Jesus even though we know it is still in the future, we can be glad and rejoice even now for such a time that is to come. Man can never bring about lasting peace. Only the government of heaven can.

The time is coming when Jesus will physically rule on earth as seen in scriptures. Let us see Luke 1:32-33 KJV, (“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of his father David: And He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end.”). It is quite encouraging to know Jesus will come and displace every government that ever was and that is at present.

Concerning the government of Jesus and realizing how the government of men have failed in achieving lasting peace and safety, Isaiah declares by revelation in 9:6,

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the GOVERNMENT shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, the everlasting Father, The Prince of PEACE. Of the increase of his GOVERNMENT and PEACE there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it…”

It is important to note the how that the bible says, there shall be no end of peace in the government of Jesus. His peace is everlasting. No government can match up the government of Jesus. Our duty is to live in such a way as to be ready for the coming government of Jesus that will bring lasting peace to the world but now Jesus is still our peace and He is resident in us and causing our hearts to be at peace even in the midst of a troubled world as he assured us in the bible (See John 16:33).

To buttress all of what has been shed light on, it is crucial for us to really know how to enjoy the peace and safety of God. They are:

  1. Be born again; believe and receive Christ (John 3:18)

  2. Think of God, let your mind be stayed on Him (Isa.26:3)

  3. Dwell in His presence via prayers and bible study (Psalm 91)

  4. Believe in the encouraging words of Jesus concerning our peace in Him in a troubled world (John 16:33).

  5. Believe in your heart that Jesus is the prince of peace (Isa.9:6)

  6. Be filled with the Spirit.
