Top 10 Bible Verses About Friendship

No matter your age, gender or ethnicity, everyone needs at least one good friend. A good friend is that person who has seen you at your worst and still decides to spend time with you. A good friend is someone with whom you can share your heart and desires. Someone who holds you accountable and stands in the gap in prayer with you.

Friends are there during the celebrations of your life; finishing college, getting married, the birth of your first child, and friends are there during times of deep sadness, the loss of a loved one, career failure, illness. Your friends lend a shoulder to cry on, a place to stay when you don’t know where to turn. They become a pillar of strength in times of total chaos, when it feels like your world is collapsing.

Throughout the Bible you read stories of friendships, Paul and Barnabas, the 12 disciples (they had to be friends, they hung out with each other for 3 years). The most noteworthy friendship is that of David and Jonathan. Their friendship was more than a friendship, The Bible describes it this way in 1 Samuel 20:16-17 “So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David… And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself”

Here are some uplifting scriptures about friendship:

3. John 15:13 ESV

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

10. Job 6:14 ESV

“He who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

When we read these scriptures, we are reminded that friendships are important. Most importantly we remember that in Jesus says in John 15:15, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything I have learned form my Farther I have made known to you.”

Jesus calls us friends, what an honour to be called friend by Jesus. The same Jesus who laid down his life so that we may have eternal life. Jesus’s friendship comes with a price, John 15:14 says, “You are my friends if you obey my command.” What is this command Jesus is referring to? We find the answer in John 15:12, “My command is this: Love each other, as I have loved you.” This seems like a reasonable command. To love each other as Jesus has loved us, bearing in mind that it was Jesus’ love for us that led him to the cross. Do you love your friends that much?
