What Do I Believe as a Christian?

Christianity is a faith that believes in God, and His redemptive nature over mankind. It has beliefs that make it unique from other faiths, and has a large following around the world. There are certain beliefs that one must identify with in order to become a Christian. In this article we will discuss 8 areas that form the main beliefs of the Christian faith.

One God

Christians believe in one God, who is almighty and powerful, and desires to have a relationship with us. God is the Creator of heaven and earth, and created us in His image (Genesis 1:1,27). He is our heavenly Father, a term that Jesus introduced to us when He came to earth (Matthew 6:32). Before then, people knew and referred to God as “God” or “the Lord” and did not have a personal relationship with Him like we do in Christ. We worship one God, and He is distinct from other gods that people worship in some religions and cultures.

Jesus Christ

Christianity is founded on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. When you believe in Christ, you become a Christian, although we see that the term has also been used to refer to those who go to Christian churches. A Christian is ideally one who has accepted the gift of salvation that Jesus offers. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Scriptures attest to this. God testified that Jesus was His Son in Matthew 3:17, “And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’”

The Holy Spirit

God is a triune being consisting of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, and is also the Spirit of Christ. “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His” (Romans 8:9). The Holy Spirit indwells us when we get saved, speaks to us, and leads us into the truth in any situation we face. He helps us obey the commands of God, and live a righteous life.

The Bible

As Christians, we have a holy book we call the Bible, and it is our manual from God on how we ought to live our lives. It is the final authority in the life of a Christian because it is God’s Word to us through those He inspired to write it. 2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” God’s Word trains us in righteousness and prepares us for the work God has for us on earth. The Bible has solutions for the problems and challenges we encounter in our daily lives. By reading it, we get to know God more, and how He works in our lives.

New Identity in Christ

When you become a born again believer of Jesus Christ, you get a new identity in Christ that you did not have before. You become a child of God, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12). Many churches make everyone believe they are a child of God simply because they attend services every Sunday. That is not true because children of God are those who are saved. As a Christian, you are righteous through Christ, a new creation, a saint, blessed, and the redeemed of the Lord. As you read the Bible, you will have a revelation of your identity in Christ.

As Christians who have accepted that Christ died to save us from our sins, we have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. He has redeemed us from the dominion of sin and from the curse of the law so that we can live a life of blessing. Titus 1:13-14 tells us, “…looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” When Jesus came to earth and died on the cross, it was to redeem mankind, but each person must receive His free gift of salvation.

New Covenant

In Christ, we are under a New Covenant by His blood. We are not under the Law, which is the old covenant, but under the covenant that God has with us through Christ. Whenever we take holy communion, we remember our covenant with Christ and that He died to set us free from bondage to sin. “In the same manner, He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me’” (1 Corinthians 11:25).

Life after Death

When we believe in Jesus, we have eternal life and we look forward to an eternity with God in heaven. John 3:16 gives us this truth. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The life that Jesus gives us when we become Christians goes beyond our physical lives on earth. For those who don’t accept Christ, they face an eternal separation from God and will end up in hell, a place reserved for the devil and his angels. It is not God’s will that anyone should go there, and that is why He sent Jesus to come and give us eternal life.

As you read the Bible, you will build on your Christian beliefs and your faith in God will grow. God has given us His Word, which is the truth, to counter the lies we have come to believe are the truth about the Christian faith. Renew your mind so that you will come to have the right beliefs about Christianity.
