What is My Purpose on Earth as a Christian?

Many Christians are wondering why God created them, and want to know their God-given purpose. They have searched everywhere to no avail and are looking for help wherever they can. If you are one of those people who are asking, “What is my purpose on earth as a Christian?” read on.

Some Christians believe that the Great Commission is their purpose because it is the assignment that Jesus Christ gave us before He left for heaven (Matthew 28:19-20). It was to create disciples in all nations and teach them everything He taught us. As believers, we are to share the Gospel with others in the world, and we still have a purpose unique to each individual.

God Set You Apart for Your Purpose

God created each one of us for a purpose, and that is what makes us unique. Because your purpose comes from God, He is the one who reveals it to you. He also confirms it with others in the body of Christ as you fellowship with them. However, whatever they tell you should line up with what God is already saying to you. If it doesn’t, do not receive their words into your spirit because they will bring you confusion.

By the time you came to this earth, God had already determined your purpose, and had ordained every single day of your life. The stories of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5), Samson (Judges 13:7), John the Baptist (Luke 1:13-15) and the apostle Paul (Galatians 1:15-16) show that God set you apart for the assignment He has for you on earth. In Ephesians 2:10 we see that God assigned work for us long ago, and prepares us for it when we accept Christ as Lord and Savior.

Not knowing your purpose does not mean that you do not have one. The apostle Paul was persecuting Christians before He had an encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. It was after he got born again that He knew His purpose. While he was pursuing his chosen path in life, God already knew what He wanted Paul to do. In the same way, when we get born again, God shows us what He wants us to do for Him on earth.

How to Know Your Purpose

You will notice that God was clear about His purpose for an individual and communicated it to them. In some instances, the parents of the individual were alerted that the child they would have was set apart for a special purpose. God told Jeremiah that He set him apart to be a prophet to the nations. He told Paul that He had called him to preach Christ to the Gentiles. He told Samson’s mother that her son would save the Israelites from the Philistines.

Seek God today and He will show you why He created you. Going to other sources like the internet will not give you the answers you are looking for. When you look at your past, you will identify your gifts, talents, skills and still not know your purpose on earth. In Jeremiah 33:3, God invites you to His presence so that He can show you what you do not know about your life and purpose.

No one can tell you your purpose but God. Do not go to others who you think might know because they do not know. If you are a believer with the Spirit of God in you, then you will hear God speak to you (John 14:16-17). He uses many ways to speak to you, and you can trust that He will tell you everything you need to know about your purpose.

As you pray and ask God to give you details of your divine purpose, there are some things you can find out. For example, you can ask God who He is calling you to serve, and how you can use your gifts to fulfill your purpose. God is willing to give you all the information you need. You can also ask God to show you which platform He has given you to do His work, and where you are to begin. With this information, you will know where to start and the steps you need to take.

When God speaks to you, confirm what you are hearing with the Bible. Everything God says to you, He confirms with His written Word. You need to confirm every voice you think is God speaking to you so that you will not follow instructions from a contrary voice. The enemy is also trying to deceive you because he knows that when you know your purpose, you will be a threat to his kingdom.

Ask God to give you a Scripture that confirms your purpose so that you will have the right foundation as you answer God’s call over your life. When you have the Word of God in your heart, you will have the conviction to move forward with confidence and boldness without a shadow of doubt. Others out there will tell you what they think you should be doing with your life but holding on to God’s Word will keep you grounded.

To increase your knowledge of what your God-given purpose is, you can read books by Christian authors and get the right perspective. You can also watch some YouTube videos from Christian ministers and others who share their stories of how they came to know their purpose. Avoid information that tells you that you can discover your purpose without God because you will fall into deception.

As you interact with other believers at church or in other forums, some will have a word from the Lord concerning your purpose. Check their words against the word of God so that you will know who is speaking by the Spirit of God (1 John 4:1). Trust that when God reveals your purpose, He will guide your steps and direct you on the right path. He is a loving Father who wants to see you fulfill the purpose He gave you.
